Modern Mining

Modern mining is technically safer than ever. With new technology and new health and safety regulations, the chances of issues arising are slimmer than have ever been before. However, even in very recent years the New Zealand disaster and the very publicised Chilean fiasco have proved that there are still many dangers in such an industry and that such dangers still need to be addressed accordingly.

Whilst some of the more recent disasters have been unavoidable and accidents that could not have been foreseen, there have still been many that have come about as a direct result of specific oversights, from poor quality gas detectors resulting in explosions to equipment checks going somewhat wayward. And it is these ‘accidents’ that can easily be avoided altogether.

The huge array of modern technology we have should mean that such accidents should never happen. From the degree of accuracy that the modern combustible gas detector can offer through to ability of machinery to dig to an unprecedented level of accuracy, simply being vigilant should be all that is needed to ensure safety in almost all cases.

Firstly, it is important to check machinery and items such as gas detectors regularly. All technology will start to fail after awhile and noticing declining accuracy is the best way to avoid problems from occurring. However, as new technology arrives, it is wise to also invest regardless. A new combustible gas detector may seem like an investment you can avoid, but not only will it make your workers safer, but many will also help to optimise machinery performance meaning that you will almost certainly see a return on investment.

Modern mining is safer than it has ever been before, but to ensure that it stays that way it is important to make sure that companies are aware of the technology they have, whether it is working as well as it should be, and simply whether or not new investments might make processes safer and more profitable.
